The short version
For 95% of Puget Sound homes we'd install architectural shingles every time. They cost about $1.50–$2.00 more per square foot installed, but they last 25–30 years instead of 15–18, carry a 110–130 mph wind warranty vs 60 mph, and hold up dramatically better against the wind-driven rain we get off the Sound.
3-tab shingles still make sense on rentals, garages, sheds, and tear-off jobs where the buyer is planning to sell within a couple years.
Lifespan in Western Washington
Manufacturer ratings assume Midwest weather. In our climate you can knock 3–5 years off the label. A 25-year 3-tab lasts about 15–18 years here; a 30-year architectural lasts 22–28.
Moss, algae, and constant moisture are the killers — architectural shingles have thicker mats and more asphalt, so they resist decay longer.
Wind rating actually matters here
Bonney Lake plateau, ridgetops in Puyallup, and anywhere near the Sound routinely see 50–70 mph gusts. A 60 mph 3-tab shingle will start losing tabs at those speeds; a 130 mph architectural (like GAF Timberline HDZ with LayerLock) holds firm.

Warranty differences
3-tab shingles typically carry a 25-year limited manufacturer warranty. Architectural shingles range from 30-year to lifetime, and manufacturers like GAF, Owens Corning, and CertainTeed offer extended system warranties (up to 50 years) when a certified contractor installs the full system.

Real cost per year
On a 2,000 sq ft roof: 3-tab installed runs ~$8,500 and lasts ~17 years = $500/yr. Architectural runs ~$11,500 and lasts ~25 years = $460/yr. Architectural is actually cheaper over the long run, and your house looks better the whole time.
